All colors of corundum (except its red sister ruby) is called “sapphire” from the Latin word for blue, "sapphirus". Best known for its shades of celestial blue, sapphire is actually available in yellow, pink, peach, orange, cognac, green, purple and violet, as well as colorless, gray, black and white. These colors have the color name added to the stone, as in "yellow sapphire," "pink sapphire" etc.

It was thought that the earth rested on a giant sapphire which reflected its colored the sky. Ancients thought that God gave Moses the Ten Commandments on tablets of sapphire, making it the most sacred stone. Sapphire was believed to inspire peace, joy, wisdom, prosperity, good health, and it was the gem of sincerity. Sapphire also illuminates the true inner beauty of those who wear it and brings well-being. It is said to be a mind-opening gem with ancient priests and sorcerers who believed it enabled them to interpret oracles and foretell the future. It also symbolized faith, remembrance, and enduring commitment of fidelity to marriage partners. In the 12th century, churchman believed sapphire was a symbol of chastity, purity and all things sacred. It is supposed to relax the wearer and clarify thought, as well as attract "divine favor." On a personal level, it prevented envy, fraud, and brings truth and good health. It also was said to be a powerful antidote for poison. This supposed "divine favor" is why sapphires often were the gem of choice for kings and high priests throughout history.

The stone is mined in many parts of the world, including Australia, Cambodia, China, Kashmir, Kenya, Madagascar, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam. Sapphires from Kashmir and Myanmar are rarest and most prized because of their vivid blue, velvety look.
