Diamonds have been prized for their brilliance, elegance, and purity, and have captivated our imaginations for thousands of years. Diamond has maintained its position throughout history as a perfect icon for love and marriage The ancient Greeks believed that diamonds were splinters of stars that had fallen to the earth. The diamond actually derives its name from the Greek word “adamas“, meaning unconquerable and indestructible. The Greek philosopher, Plato wrote about diamonds as living beings, embodying celestial spirits. It is believed that diamonds protect an individual from harm and actually bring luck and success to the wearer, and endowing the wearer with charm and the ability to attract others. Diamond was also believed to inspire loyalty, rouse romance and encourage a joyful life. Some said that they were tears of the gods. Diamonds also were placed in the armor of kings to protect them in battle.

Naturally occurring fancy colored diamonds are typically more rare and expensive than white, with true red being most uncommon, followed by blue and then green. Diamonds come naturally in every color of the rainbow, although today man has been able to irradiate some diamonds to change the color.

There are various diamond enhancements in the marketplace, such as irradiation to change the body color of the stone, fracture filling to make a void in the stone less noticeable, laser drilling to remove dark inclusions, and high-pressure high-temperature treatment (HPHT) to “bleach“ a stone to make it a higher color grade.
